Wildfires Arson Murder

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Almost six years after a wildfire destroyed nearly 1,000 homes in Southern California, prosecutors say they have enough evidence to charge a prison inmate with arson and murder in connection with the 2003 blaze.

San Bernardino County District Attorney Michael Ramos said Tuesday that a special criminal grand jury indicted Rickie Lee Fowler, a 28-year-old prison inmate, on arson and murder charges in connection to the wildfire that has been linked to five heart attack deaths.

Fowler is serving time in state prison for burglary. He was first interviewed in connection with fire in February 2004, based on a telephone tip, but there was not enough evidence to charge him, San Bernardino County Deputy District Attorney Vic Stull said.

The investigation began to gain steam in February 2008, and new evidence obtained as recently as three weeks ago allowed prosecutors to identify Fowler as a suspect, Stull said.

He faces five counts of murder, one count of aggravated arson and one count of arson of an inhabited structure. The statute of limitations on arson would have run out on Oct. 25.

The notorious Old Fire erupted in the Waterman Canyon area of the San Bernardino Mountains above the city of San Bernardino and eventually swept across 90,000 acres, or about 140 square miles.

Several witnesses reported seeing a passenger in a white van tossing burning objects into dry brush. In late 2004, authorities said they were focusing on a young man they believed may have been the arsonist and were trying to identify a second man but did not have enough evidence to make arrests.

Are all bankers evil? Maybe not. Over the past year, it’s become fashionable to trash Wall Street for unbridled greed and the rapacious use of billions in taxpayer bailout funds. Much of the outrage is justified, since Wall Street firms like Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, and Citigroup stoked the flames that nearly torched the entire economy. But there’s been rough justice for a few of those firms, now either defunct or de facto wards of the state.

Other firms have filled the void, becoming even more prominent. One of them is JPMorgan Chase, whose chief executive, Jamie Dimon, has largely escaped the pitchforks aimed at his fellow Wall Street CEOs. Over the course of the financial crisis, JPMorgan Chase remained profitable, a pillar of relative stability in the midst of an earthquake. The bank absorbed the failed Bear Stearns and Washington Mutual, while accepting $25 billion in bailout money that it paid back with interest once the government allowed it to. Through it all, Dimon consulted frequently with officials in Washington, and news reports have even depicted him as President Barack Obama’s favorite banker. A new biography of Dimon, Last Man Standing by Duff McDonald, describes Dimon as a diligent and trustworthy executive who has risen above the swill of Wall Street. I spoke recently with McDonald about the man some think will be the next treasury secretary. Excerpts

I don’t think Jamie Dimon would ever run for office. He wouldn’t put his family in that position or deal with the attendant issues. But would he accept an appointment? Don’t be surprised if he does. When Obama got elected, there were rumors that Dimon would end up in Washington. I asked him why he didn’t shoot down the rumors. He said, “Isn’t it kind of presumptuous to turn down a job you haven’t been offered?” But if he were offered the position of treasury secretary, it’s almost a slam-dunk he would take it. It’s the only thing he has left to do–public service. He told me that his one regret is never having done any public service, and he’d like to.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Federal Aviation Administration has opened its own investigation into the 50-mile flight of the helium balloon that briefly delayed flights at Denver International Airport after a couple reported that their 6-year-old son may have been on board, an official said Tuesday.

FAA spokesman Mike Fergus said the agency investigates civil allegations rather than criminal ones. He declined to provide details on the nature of the FAA probe or its possible outcome.

Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden has said investigators believe amateur storm chasers Richard and Mayumi Heene called 911 Thursday saying they thought their son, Falcon, was aboard the large helium balloon that floated away from their yard in Fort Collins in a bid to get publicity for a reality TV show.

The balloon landed 50 miles away near Denver International Airport. Some flights had to be changed to a different runway for 20 minutes.

Falcon was found safe at home.

Alderden said he is seeking charges against the Heenes including conspiracy, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, making a false report to authorities, and attempting to influence a public servant. The most serious charges are felonies and carry a maximum sentence of six years in prison.
Thomas told NBC’s “Today” show on Tuesday that he had nothing to do with the hoax and didn’t know about the balloon being launched until he saw it on television. Asked whether he should be profiting by selling his story, Thomas, who described himself as an entrepreneur and a college student, said he was told that people sell their stories to the media and that he was paid “way less than most people think.”

Thomas helped Richard Heene organize his thoughts and worked with him from March to May, Lee said. Thomas’ notes include Richard Heene discussing a hoax that involved a balloon to make it seem like there was a UFO, Lee said.

Lee said investigators told her Thomas would not face charges but that she was seeking immunity for him “just to be safe.” Thomas has said he had no idea that a possible hoax could involve the Heene children.

polansiki

Newly released documents have shed light on how fugitive film director Roman Polanski came to be arrested during a trip to Zurich last month.

The AP news agency said e-mails show that the Swiss authorities tipped off their US counterparts that Polanski, 76, was preparing to travel to Zurich.

The filmmaker was held as he travelled from France to collect an award.

He has been wanted in the US since pleading guilty to unlawful sex with an underage girl and then fleeing in 1978.

The US authorities have so far declined to say how they learned of Polanski’s trip to Zurich. But the e-mails revealed by AP, following a public records request, show that the information came from the Swiss Federal Office of Justice.

After receiving the tip-off, US federal officials alerted prosecutors in Los Angeles, who drafted an arrest warrant, according to AP.

Correspondents say is not clear why Switzerland chose to pursue Polanski now, when the director has been a frequent visitor to that country.

He has lost an appeal to be released on bail and is currently being held in a Swiss jail ahead of his possible extradition to the United States.
